FYS 1104 BURNOUT & STRESS PHENOMENON

The Burnout and Stress Phenomenon: Human Development Approaches to Well-Being

How can one define burnout? Are there indicators of a positive or negative well-being? Can certain attributes lead to personal burnout? Will individuals in specific disciplines be more likely to experience professional burnout? In this course, students will define and explore the concept of “burnout.” Through introspection, collaborative discussion, research, and other forms of inquiry, students will examine the socioemotional, cognitive, and cultural dimensions of stress and burnout. Students will apply concepts to their identities, contexts, and disciplines. Students will also view burnout through unfamiliar perspectives and theories. The course challenges students to critically examine their own thinking and explore stress and burnout through multiple developmental, psychological, and philosophical perspectives.
