FYS 1095 POP CULTURE CRITICISM
Pop Culture Criticism: Critiquing Pop Art Without Robbing It of Fun
Pop culture is the currency of the realm. It is how we entertain ourselves, seek out possible friends, and spark a new topic when conversations lull. It is also gives us insight into history, society, and the creators behind it. The ability to engage in pop culture—be it film, music, literature, or television—is a key to understanding the people and world around you. Additionally, learning to analyze and write about pop culture provides you with skills that work across disciplines. The skills needed to analyze a David Fincher film are transferable to investigating the root causes of the Vietnam War or empathetically grasping how one’s childhood can influence one's personality. Through classroom discussions of poems, short stories, films, television episodes, songs, and comic book stories, students will hone their observation, research, and writing skills.
