FYS 1102 FRANK SINATRA & AMERICAN CENT
Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) was one of the most popular entertainers of the twentieth century with a career encompassing live performances, radio, recording, films, and television. Students in this course will examine how the United States changed during the twentieth century through the lens of Sinatra’s life and career. By engaging with his work in the various media, this seminar explores broader developments in the nation, such as immigration and ethnicity, the impact of technological change, the civil rights movement, the growth of the United States as a world power and subsequent uncertainty about its role in the world, the collapse of the Liberal Consensus, changing gender roles, and the culture of celebrity.
