An exploration of different U.S. media organizations' news coverage of major happenings in the past and present. The course examines what facts are used, what sources are cited, and whether the stories are assembled in a fair and balanced way. Students will look at how closely various media are able to assemble truthful accounts and which are prone to questionable practices and fake news. Students will assess magazine articles, newspaper stories, television coverage, podcasts, and radio broadcasts. They will discern political biases and information blind spots to determine which organizations are trying to be accurate and fair-minded and which are acting as disseminators of propaganda.
