FYS 1109 INCAS PAST AND PRESENT

An exploration of Indigenous history, culture, and current aspirations. Students will discover the impressive multi-ethnic Inca Empire. Inca elite and commoners navigated colonialism and created hybrid cultures. Inca descendants imagined alternatives to Spanish rule and sought radical independence. In modernizing states, Indigenous people struggle for citizen’s cultural, political, and economic rights.

This course may include an optional section that will meet for an additional hour each week to discuss supplemental readings in Spanish. Students participating in the foreign language section will receive one additional credit hour, pass/not passed marking.
