Neuroscience Major

The interdisciplinary major in neuroscience is intended to fill the needs of students seeking understanding of the biological bases of behavior. It guides the student toward investigation of physiological, chemical, structural, and developmental foundations of brain functioning and behavior using the techniques of the primary disciplines of psychology, biology, and chemistry with contributions from a variety of other fields.

Requirements

The major consists of twelve courses (nine core courses, two science-based electives and one interdisciplinary elective).

A score of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement Psychology Examination or its equivalent may be substituted for PSY 100. This exception requires the student to choose an additional laboratory course for the major. Independent research, either as Individual Study or Honors Study, is strongly recommended.

Students may petition the program to have selected FYS or Study Away courses count as Science-based or Interdisciplinary electives.

Required Introductory and Pre-requisite Courses

Required 100 and 200 level courses.

Only the first course in the Organic Chemistry sequence (CHM 223) is required for the major.

One course in statistics is required. Choose from PSY 201, STA 107, STA 206, HMD 250.

Either BIO 209 (pre-requisite for BIO302 or BIO309) or CHM 224 (pre-requisite for CHM303) is required for the major
