The department equips students with principled tools and frameworks to explore and understand East Asian nations and cultures in the global context from non-Eurocentric perspectives. EAS courses challenge students to rethink commonly held assumptions and beliefs that have laid the political, economic, and cultural foundations in East Asian discourses. These courses also help the students to understand domestic issues that Asian Americans are facing as well as international issues that the US is confronted with in East Asia. EAS majors and minors are grounded in extensive language training that enables the students to access primary and secondary source materials.
The department offers rigorous Chinese and Japanese language curricula. Through our intensive language training, students will be able to broaden their modes of thinking; to deepen their sensitivity to understand others; and to improve their communication skills. Both Chinese and Japanese programs offer upper-level language courses designed to prepare the students for their professional careers.
All EAS and CHN/JPN courses will train students to sharpen their critical reading and thinking skills by analyzing textual and audio-visual materials and/or through language studies. Students in East Asian Studies have habitually chosen a second major such as Economics, History, International Relations, and so on to supplement their academic pursuits. They can also combine their interests in East Asia with an Integrative Pathway, or studies at one of the College’s certificate centers.
