SPA 425 TEACHING & LEARNING SPANISH
Practical skills for the teaching of Spanish with techniques for fostering a communicative environment, language in context and community engagement. The course analyzes concepts of Foreign Language pedagogy, applied linguistics, the benefits of bilingualism, whole language programs, International Baccalaureate, national standards, Spanglish, and learning styles with assessment-based and creative activities, virtual observations, and teaching practica in local schools. Conducted in Spanish, this course fulfills the capstone requirement and counts toward the Hispanic Studies and Latin American and Latino Studies majors and minors. It includes a major research paper. It is required by the State Board of Education for certification.
Notes
This course will be particularly suited to those working toward teaching certification (State of Connecticut requirement), planning graduate study in Spanish, or entering fields where team collaboration, group and individual presentations, critical skills and independent thinking are prized. This course may be taken at the 200, 300, or 400 level as requirements will vary depending on the level chosen. State Certification reflects work done on the 300 or 400 level. Students may not receive credit for SPA 325 and SPA 425, but may take SPA 225 and either SPA 325 or SPA 425.
