HIS 358 ANDEAN EXTRACTIVISM & PROTEST

Andean history links economics with the environment. Incas integrated ecological zones with reciprocity and redistribution. Spanish colonial mining economies over-exploited land and labor and built cities. Post-independence booms and busts consumed natural resources and labor without sustainable or equitable development. Today’s unfettered extractivism and urbanization produce fortunes, misery, and creative protests.
