HIS 287 CC: INTRO TO GLOBAL CAPITALISM

This course introduces students to global capitalism as a historical and theoretical field of study, as well as an arena of contestation and engagement. The first part of the course will explore the historical origins, development, and contemporary forms of capitalism from multiple perspectives (local and global) and multiple disciplines (economic, political, social, cultural, ideological, economic, and environmental). It will also examine the most important debates concerning how global capitalism has shaped the world - both human and natural - in both positive and negative ways. The second part of the course examines contemporary social movements that seek to redress some of the distinctive consequences and social injustices related to global capitalism. Topics include theories of capitalism, imperialism, colonialism, communism, forms of resistance, neoliberalism, globalization, urbanization, reparations, restorative justice, and the future of capitalism.
