EDU 250 CC: CITIES AND SCHOOLS

This course explores the recursive relationship between cities and their schools, focusing on the historical, sociopolitical, economic, and cultural forces that shape urban educational settings. While we will study the specific challenges that urban schools face (for example, decades of institutional racism, segregation, disinvestment), we will also consider the particular strengths and opportunities that city schools offer. The course will be organized around the following questions: What is the relationship between schools and communities? What forces have shaped urban schools and communities? What challenges do urban schools face? What unique assets and possibilities do urban schools have? What school improvement strategies are currently being implemented? To what extent are these strategies effective?
