ANT 275 SOCIAL LIFE OF RESOURCES
Natural resources are not simply “out there,” waiting to be discovered and used. This course examines how substances like minerals, forests, water, and energy become recognized, valued, and governed through social classification, scientific knowledge, political struggle, labor, infrastructure, and extraction. Students will explore how material and social worlds become inseparably entwined, and how extraction transforms landscapes, communities, Indigenous sovereignty, and multispecies life across global markets. Dynamic relationships among material deposits, land use, environmental transformation, and affected communities are examined with original case studies and a resource extraction mapping project.
