PHI 330X PAINE V. BURKE, LEFT V. RIGHT
In the 18th century, Paine and Burke disagreed about the French Revolution and then about absolutely everything else. Their famous acrimonious debate, reflecting grossly divergent worldviews through arguments over philosophical matters small and large, constitutes the foundation of the left-right political divide in America. Students will study their central and peripheral writings as well as the legacy they produced.
