ITL 306 MODERNISM AND THE AVANT-GARDE

This course introduces some key debates about first-wave feminism, labor movements, rising nationalism and imperialism, the advent of psychoanalysis, and massive technological innovation between the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. It explores how these debates affected creativity through modernist and avant-garde literature, film, and art in Italy and other world locations.


Works by thinkers, writers, filmmakers and artists may vary from year to year and may include some by Sibilla Aleramo, Valentine de Saint Point, Benedetta, F.T. Marinetti, Italo Svevo, Sigmund Freud, Anna Kulishov, Luis Buñuel, Frida Kahlo and Langston Hughes.

Prerequisite

One upper 200-level course in Italian or permission of the instructor.
