HIS 244 THE SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE US
This course explores how major events and transformations in modern US history impacted the lives of everyday people, from Reconstruction and Jim Crow in the nineteenth century to urbanism, gender, race relations, and mass incarceration in the twentieth century. Students will focus on the lives of individuals, families, and cultural groups. The course utilizes secondary scholarship to understand the historical analysis of the themes presented in class, and examines primary sources so students can conceptualize theories of their own. Students will also be exposed to cultural expressions of life in modern America through poetry, film, and music.
