HIS 121 CC: NATIONALISM

This course is a study of the history of nations and nationalism. What is nationalism? Where did it come from? And whom has it served? This discussion-based class explores these questions through close engagement with scholars of nationalism as well as archival sources from nationalist movements in the Global North (e.g., the United States) and the Global South in order to learn about the emergence of nation-states; the history of nationalism and its relationship to colonialism; changing ideas of citizenship; and the ways in which race, class, gender, sexuality, and ethnicity have shaped nationalism.
