GOV 345 ARCTIC GEOPOLITICS

Arctic Geopolitics:  Law, environment, security, and Economics

This course examines the most pressing current geopolitical issues related to the eight Arctic states, including the environment, politics, security, economics, and law from a regional and international perspective.  The course explores environmental, energy, and mineral extraction issues and the implications arising from increasing Arctic maritime access and potential deep seabed mining.  It also examines cooperation, conflict, and territorial claims, with special emphasis on the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.  Security issues in the Arctic focus on critical infrastructure development and protection.
