BOT 493C INDIG USE TROPICAL RAINFORESTS
Students will explore how indigenous peoples perceive, relate to and use the tropical rainforest and critically examine potential ecological and economic applications and implications. Discussion of current literature will provide a rich array of data and insights into the use of resources and their applications in community development, rainforest conservation and western economies. An ethnobiological and environmental perspective will be used to analyze relevant cases and current issues, including pharmaceutical and biodiversity prospecting, management and sustainability.
Notes
This course may include an optional section that will meet for an additional hour each week to discuss supplemental readings in Spanish. Students participating in the foreign language section will receive one additional credit hour, pass/not passed marking.
Students may not receive credit for both this course and for ANT/ES/BOT 207.
