SPA 228 ISLAM & JUDAISM IN HISPANIC WO

Analysis of the public and private exchanges that frame coexistence and difference in Spain, Latin America, and Latino USA. The course includes close readings of Islamic and Jewish primary texts in Spanish cultural traditions and Christian thought, investigating the other’s positionality, social roles, power, gender, legal governance, sexuality, race, and ethnicity. Students will explore how poetry, narrative, architecture, history, birth records, foods, film, and social discourse underscore the clash, fusion, and persistence of these traditions in the Hispanic World. Course writing requirements reflect departmental standards for individual levels.
