PHI 440R BIG IDEAS OF THE 19TH CENTURY

An examination of some of the major ideas and intellectual trends that shaped the 19th century.  Starting with Hegel’s philosophy of history, topics may include enlightenment, emancipation, the ideas of progress and revolution, liberalism, nationalism, socialism/communism, racial theories, Darwinism (biological and social), the idea of decadence, antisemitism, and Zionism.
