MUS 254 I HEAR AMERICA SING:A CAPPELLA
A cultural, historical, stylistic, and practical study of communal a cappella singing in the U.S. Topics include singing schools, sacred harp, barbershop, gospel, vocal jazz, and collegiate a cappella, including singing traditions at Connecticut College. The course considers what distinguishes these genres, how they create community, who has access to them, and who the gatekeepers are. Students will learn/perform music from several traditions. No prior musical training needed.
