MUS 248 CLASSICAL, ROMANTIC, & MODERN
An examination of western art musics from the Classical era to the present. Through its focus on how historical and social changes affect (and are affected by) musical developments, the course investigates the ways in which musical cultures intersect with revolutions, wars, and ongoing debates about gender, race, and sexuality. Students will encounter a wide variety of pieces, from the symphony to pure electronic music, from grand opera to the film musical. Composers include Mozart, Beethoven, Clara Schumann, Miles Davis, and Leonard Bernstein, among many others.

The ability to read music is required.
