JS 215 THE JEWISH EXPERIENCE IN SPAIN

This course examines the experience of Jews in Spain at the cusp of modernity and into the present. Their experience serves as a case study of intercultural interchange between and among Jews, Muslims, and Christians. It ended badly, as each identity group, in differing ways, became more radicalized. Students will explore the various ways in which Jews negotiated their dual identities, as Jews, Crypto-Jews, and New Christians, and the ways in which the Sephardic Jewish experience influences Ashkenazic and Mizrahi/Israeli Jewish self-understanding. Primary texts/authors include: the Zohar, Ibn Daud, and Maimonides.
