HIS 263 ISLAM IN ASIA

An exploration of the history of Muslim communities across Asia, where nearly two-thirds of the world's Muslims reside today, as well as their diverse religious, cultural, and political practices that challenge dominant conceptions of Islam focused on the Middle East. This discussion-based course traces Islam in Asia from the establishment of the earliest Muslim communities in Asia, through the founding and dissolution of the Mughal and Ottoman Empires, struggles with colonialism, to postcolonial nationalisms and transnationalisms of the present day. Topics include political Islam, identity, imperialism, and nationalism.
