GOV 493P POLITICAL LEADERSHIP

Political Leadership: Ancient and Modern. This political theory course explores the idea that what the Greek philosopher Aristotle calls "political rule" has existed historically here and there; and that political rule differs from military, theocratic, technocratic, corporate, and despotic rule.  This course asks to what extent the theories of the ancient city-state theorists can be meaningfully applied to the political experience of the past two centuries.  Readings from Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, A. Hamilton, A. Lincoln, F. Douglass, Churchill, de Gaulle, and others.
