FRH 312 MODERN FRENCH RESISTANCE
Resistance and Memory in 20th and 21st Century France An upper-level course introducing students to 20th- and 21st-century French history, literature, and culture through a survey of representations of the French Resistance during World War II and beyond. Studying literary and cinematographic works from important cultural figures such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Marguerite Duras, Charlotte Delbo, Louis Malle, and Patrick Modiano, students will examine what factors cause individuals to disobey official authority; what acts or attitudes constitute resistance; and how memories of the French resistance have evolved in response to contemporary political crises. Emphasis on written and oral expression. Taught in French.
