FRH 277 CC: STREET ART/SOC MEDIA/REVOL
Street art, social media, and dissident revolt in France, the Arab World, and Africa An exploration of how people, particularly women and minorities, have been actors in urban space and the public sphere, constituting these domains as spaces of revolt in France, Africa, and Arab countries from the late 18th century until today. Students will consider how art (including rap and graffiti), culture, media, and social media are used to create revolt and dissidence toward colonialism, racism, patriarchy, dictatorship, gender discrimination, and LGBTQ+ inequality. Emphasis on how struggles are informed by both theory and collective memory, and how social media helped organize revolts and revolutions in both virtual space and in the world outside, especially in Francophone countries.
