CLA 305 PTOLEMAIC EGYPT

Investigation of Ptolemaic Egypt from Ptolemy I to Cleopatra VII as a window onto culture, religion, and politics in the Hellenistic age. Readings and discussion include Ptolemaic patronage of Egyptian priests and temples; ruler cult; royal incest; the rise of queens; maritime empire; pageantry and spectacle; court poetry, science, and art; life outside Alexandria; and Greek-Egyptian relations.
