MUS 232 RITUAL SOUNDS, GLOBAL LONGINGS

Tracing the history of early Chinese theater, the course follows the rise of Cantonese opera in the context of outmigration from China’s Pearl River delta. Course materials include classic texts on opera and ritual, readings in cultural studies and history, and a film adaptation of The Flower Princess, a Cantonese opera by Tong Dik Sang. The course is designed for students interested in music, East Asian studies, and studies of migration and diaspora. No prior musical experience is required.
