ITL 303 ISLAM IN THE AGE OF DANTE
An examination of the diverse depictions of Islam in European literature of the 13th to 14th centuries. The course considers a wide range of genres including travel narrative, crusade epic, and novelistic traditions. The course includes the complex portrayals of Islamic culture within Dante's Divine Comedy and explores the Islamic Book of the Stair as a possible source of Dante's poem.
Notes
This course may include an optional section that will meet for an additional hour each week to discuss supplemental readings in Italian. Students participating in the foreign language section will receive one additional credit hour, pass/not passed marking.

Prerequisite
Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and to first-year students with permission of the instructor.
