HIS 429 GROWING UP IN AFRICA
This seminar introduces diverse African experiences of childhood and adolescence from the late 1800s to the present. Readings include African memoirs, novels, and music, in addition to scholarly articles. The course focuses on how young Africans have responded to the authority of family members, teachers, and political leaders; as well as expectations about their gender formation and sexuality.
Notes
No prerequisites, although some familiarity with African history and/or contemporary African societies would be useful.
