FYS 1072 SCHOOLING & STORYTELLING
This seminar explores storytelling as an educational practice. Students will read, watch, listen to, and tell stories about schooling experiences while simultaneously studying storytelling as a strategy for learning. The course focuses on the following questions: What can we learn about American schools through studying the stories told about them? How can storytelling be used to promote learning, creativity, empathy, and social justice? Students will analyze stories about schooling experiences in various media (e.g., oral-storytelling, graphic novels, film, podcasts, digital stories), read research and theory, write both reflectively and analytically, and compose and share their own stories. The course includes a community-based learning project.
