FRH 452 TRANSLATION & TRANSLATABILITY

Theories of Translation and Translatability: Babel, Barbarians, and “Blah Blah Blah”  Translation is often framed as a response to a problem between mutually unintelligible languages. This course offers a different view: translation can inspire productive encounters, in a wider sense of translating ideas, concepts, and experiences, as a paradigm for understanding – and misunderstanding – different people and cultures. Texts by Rousseau, Benjamin, Jakobson, Derrida, Steiner, and Cassin. No prior experience in translation is required. Taught in French.
