FRH 420 WOMAN'S BODY IN AFRICA, FRANCE

Rather than being a stable signifier of female oppression, the woman’s body signifies a number of potentially conflicting projects and positions in colonial and postcolonial Sub-Saharan and North African societies. It is also defined by opposition to the female colonial body, that of a European and French women in the 19th and 20th centuries. This seminar analyzes the body as a sign and a bearer of social and political ideologies embedded in discourses of patriarchy, violence, desire, orientalism, and capitalism, and its representation though literature, art, and fashion. In French.
