EAS 211 MEDIA AND POP CULTURE IN JAPAN
An examination of popular culture and media worlds in Japan as a way to understand shifting relations and identities in the region. What are the sociocultural and geopolitical contexts through which media is produced, distributed, and consumed – in Japan and transnationally? The course explores the relationship between media and culture through critical engagement with popular culture and visual media, both as text and as cultural practice. Students will analyze how history and national identities are refigured and re-narrated in popular media, reflecting contemporary anxieties and future possibilities.
