The department gives students the opportunity to study the literature produced in Great Britain, the United States, and the rest of the world where English is spoken and written. Students may select from a wide range of courses that focus on major writers and genres, considering the relationship of literary works to their historical and geographical contexts, and connect the study of English literature's to other disciplines. Our courses emphasize the pleasures of the imagination and seek to develop habits of critical thinking, rigorous analysis, and cogent writing.

The department offers concentrations in both creative writing (poetry or fiction) and the comparative study of race and ethnicity, in connection with the Center for the Critical Study of Race and Ethnicity.
