FYS 1050 CRAFT TODAY: HISTORY & MAKING

This first-year seminar will explore the role of craft today from both an historical and hands-on approach. Students will explore the history of modern craft beginning with the Arts and Crafts movement (ca. 1860-1930) and unpack the influence of the Bauhaus and modernism. An examination of craft education, publication, business, and exhibition from Black Mountain College and Haystack Mountain School to Instagram will place particular emphasis on intersectionality and identity. Students will explore new craft techniques through hands-on workshops and projects. A background in making and crafting is not required, but an eagerness to try new things is recommended.
