FYS 1023 THINKING FRENCH STYLE

French ways of thinking and of creating art allow, and historically have enabled, individuals to reconfigure politics, religion, knowledge, and patriarchy, changing those facets of society and the relationships of individuals to them.  This course examines those philosophical and aesthetic traditions, both in France over the last four centuries and in the United States, where French influence has been strong in popular culture and decisive on colleges, universities, and intellectual life generally.  Through engagement with French thought and art, students will learn a powerful way to be in the world: they will learn to think, French style.
