FYS 119J MY SO-CALLED DIGITAL LIFE

Social and digital media have become an integral part of everyday life as an extension of the self and the physical world. The more digital media are integrated into our lives, the more people will use them to figure out who they are. Some contemporary research suggests that digital media significantly affects how people explore their race, gender, and sexuality online. However, a question that remains unasked and unanswered is how the digital persona affects the physical body. Students in the course will explore the dimensions of their digital embodiment to determine where they draw the boundary between the digital and physical body, if at all. Additional discussions will include questions of agency within digital media platforms, the dichotomy of anonymity versus authenticity, and the unacknowledged debt internet users owe to sex workers for pioneering technologies they take for granted.
