FYS 109Z NUDGING TO SUCCESS

What does it mean to be successful and what insights can we draw from economics about how best to achieve it? This course will investigate the idea of success from an economic perspective. We will reflect on the way success is defined in the writings of philosopher economists. We will learn from the studies of economic psychologists about heuristics, or ways of thinking, that are either mental shortcuts which help us or cognitive biases which hinder us in our pursuit of success. Finally, drawing on the work of behavioral economists, we will apply insights from nudge theory to our own individual pursuits of success. Through this exploration of the economic literature on success, we will synthesize and apply these insights directly to our own lives here at Connecticut College, in New London, and beyond.
