FYS 109S POPULISM AND PROTEST

From Poland to the U.S., from Brazil to the Philippines, populist leaders and movements have taken hold of political discourse and institutions. In each case, hundreds of thousands have mobilized nationally and transnationally in support of, or against, these leaders and their platforms. This course examines the dynamic between populism and mobilization from a global, comparative perspective. Students will discuss how this dynamic interacts with other important themes, including gender and masculinity, nationalism, migrant and refugee rights, environmentalism, and neoliberal capitalism.
