FYS 108N UTOPIA/DYSTOPIA

A study of literary and cinematic depictions of ideal societies and their nightmare counterparts from classic (More, Campanella) to contemporary (Butler, Le Guin, Scott), with an emphasis on the genre as a vehicle for political and social critique.  Students will discuss recent dystopian fiction as a reflection of anxieties for humanity and the planet.  The course examines real-world utopian projects, such as U.S.S.R. and U.S. intentional communities, including Connecticut College as a constructed ideal.
