ENG 327 THE RISE OF THE NOVEL
A survey of the British novel from the early 18th century to the mid-19th century. Attention to how the novel registers the problems raised by urban and print culture, increasing social instability, and the changing status of women. Authors may include Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, Burney, Austen, Thackeray, and Charlotte Brontë.
Prerequisite
Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. For sophomores,
ENG 250 is strongly recommended.
